High Score

I had the amazing opportunity to work with Great Big Story on the Netflix documentary series High Score. It was refreshing to work on a more narrative focused project, so thankful for this experience!

Storyboards

In High Score, each animated scene was edited over VO, usually intercut with live action from an interview. We decided to create playful, whimsical vignettes to pair well with the nostalgia of the show.

S01EP3

This scene focuses on Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima. Inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, Richard developed Ultima to introduce unprecedented levels of choice and complexity to players.

S01EP4

This scene highlights the story of Tom Kalinske coming to Sega from Mattel, having been headhunted by Sega President Hayao Nakayama during his vacation in Hawaii. He was known to bring Sega to the forefront in the video game industry as one of Nintendo’s competitors, honing in on marketing towards teens and sports fans.

S01EP5

This scene is about Jim Riley and the development of Night Trap. Hasbro was concerned that the game may feature “reproducible violence.” After much deliberation, they agreed on featuring creatures called “Augers”, who limp slowly with blood-draining devices. Ironically, Night Trap ended up being scrutinized in the 1993 Congressional hearings for video game violence.
